With a diverse array of ecosystems occurring in close proximity to each other, the islands offer excellent field opportunities for both terrestrial and marine biodiversity research, as well as focused research and interventions in social-ecological systems. Despite their significance, however, political considerations and remoteness from the mainland have resulted in limited attention to these enigmatic islands. As the longest serving NGO focusing on environmental research and conservation in the islands, one of ANET's key goals will be to address environmental challenges in the islands through inter-organisational collaborations and the facilitation of engagements as required by organisations with similar visions and goals. It is hoped that eventually, this will lead to the development of a multidisciplinary marine and terrestrial research hub that enables organisations to address a range of vital themes of contemporary significance to the islands.
Over the years, ANET has facilitated ongoing research activities and collaborated on projects with several partners such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore, the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore, the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), Mysore and the Dakshin Foundation, Bangalore. In future, we aim to invite other government organisations as well as NGO partners with an interest ecological and social research to participate in this process. ANET's activities for expansion in this regard has been supported with financial support from organisations such as the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and other institutional donors. As part of this project we invite expressions of interest from organisations across the country.
